South Padre Island, Texas is located precisely at Latitude 26.11°N, Longitude 97.17°W, 2.5 degrees above the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5°N. This is the most northerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon.
The equivalent line of latitude south of the equator is called the Tropic of Capricorn, and the region between the two, centered on the Equator, is known as the Tropics.
